PSHE

Intent

At St Mary and St Michael Catholic Primary School, we place our children at the heart of everything we do and offer them an engaging PSHE curriculum through which the children develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to be effective contributors, confident individuals, successful learners and responsible citizens.

Through our PSHE curriculum, our school environment, our school ethos and the strength of our relationships, we strive to promote pupils’ self-esteem and emotional and physical well-being and help them to form and maintain worthwhile and satisfying relationships, based on respect for themselves and for others, at home, at school, at work and in the community.

Children are encouraged and supported as they take part in a wide range of activities and experiences across and beyond the curriculum, contributing fully to the life of their school and communities. In doing so they learn to recognise their own worth, work well with others and become increasingly responsible for their own learning. They reflect on their experiences and understand how they are developing personally and socially, tackling many of the spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. They learn to understand and respect our common humanity; diversity and differences so that they can go on to form the effective, fulfilling relationships that are an essential part of life and learning.

Implementation and Impact

At St Mary and St Michael Catholic Primary, PSHE blends seamlessly into everyday school life in order to maximise the impact of acquiring essential knowledge.

The Curriculum

We teach PSHE, Citizenship, Careers and Financial Literacy through our PSHE curriculum through Ten:Ten Life to the Full+ Scheme of Work. It is part of the core curriculum for KS1 and KS2 and Personal, Social and Emotional Development is part of the core curriculum at the Foundation Stage. Opportunities for promoting pupils’ personal, social and emotional development exist throughout the curriculum. Learning should take a positive approach that does not attempt to induce shock or guilt, and focuses on what pupils can do to be healthy, stay safe, enjoy and achieve, make a positive contribution and achieve economic wellbeing.

PSHE education is provided through a spiral programme that gradually expands and enriches key concepts, increases knowledge, deepens understanding, and rehearses and develops key skills through a thematic approach.
