Writing

Writing lessons in our school follow the Talk for Writing teaching framework developed by Pie Corbett. Fiction and non-fiction genres of writing studied in each year group follow a similar structure so that there is a consistent approach throughout the school that the children are familiar with. This consistent approach encourages good progress in the standards of writing throughout our school as punctuation and grammatical knowledge are built upon each year and revisited regularly to practise the skills and commit them to long term memory. Each writing unit lasts between 3 – 4 weeks and follows the three I’s approach – Imitate, Innovate and Independent application. In Early Years and Year 1, texts and books regularly inform writing units the children study. In Years 2 – 6, writing units are linked where possible to the whole class texts children study in their Guided Reading lessons.
